The Call of Duty series has returned to the modern combat scene for its second installment this fall with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The title, currently being developed by Infinity Ward will be released on November 10th, 2009 for the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and on November 24th for the PC platform. Alongside Modern Warfare 2, a Wii version being developed separately by Treyarch, which will be based primarily on the Call of Duty 4 storyline and game design. A new comic book Modern Warfare: Ghost is also being produce and will be based on the characters and storyline introduced in Modern Warfare 2.
The game will once again feature a single player campaign mode, this time spanning over three continents and include missions in Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, Brazil, and the United States. Game producers have confirmed that the single player campaign will last between 6 and 10 hours, and feature a variety of different environments.
Modern Warfare 2 picks up right where Call of Duty 4 left off, where Vladimir Makarov has taken over the ultra nationalists and once again has grown into a global threat that needs to be taken care of. You now take the form of Sergeant Gary Roach Sanderson after your previous character, Soap Mactavish, has been promoted to captain after the bang up job he did in Call of Duty 4. This mission again sounds simple – to defeat the ultra nationalists and restore world security. However, as the game progresses you will find that this is much easier said then done.
Another new feature in Modern Warfare 2 is the “Special Ops” mode, which is a cooperative mode that consists of its own independent missions and an entirely different storyline than the single player campaign mode. Special Ops permits up to two players to join the action, and successfully completing the mission will give you extra points that can be used to unlock further missions in the mode.
Modern Warfare 2 also features a completely new online experience, which comes complete with an unlockable reward system, all new weapons and equipment, and 15 different kill streak rewards which can be achieved in-game. These include the ability to receive a supply drop after four kills, a predator missile strike after five kills, and to call in a strike by a gunship after achieving 11 enemy kills in a row. One important new key feature is host migration, which will prevent the game from being dropped if the match host leaves the game (a major problem that players complained about in Call of Duty 4). The multiplayer mode will also feature six individual game play modes: Free-For-All, Search & Destroy, Demolition, Domination, Team Deathmatch, and Capture the Flag.
The game will be released in four different retail versions: standard, Veteran, Hardened, and Prestige. Each version will have its own unique package contents, including a steel book case and art book for Hardened, and even fully functioning night vision goggles in the Prestige edition. However, if you are interested in seeing your friends in the dark be prepared to fork over quite a bit of cash, the Prestige Edition comes with a price tag of $138.98. And unfortunately for PC players, you will only be receiving the standard edition which includes the game and instruction manual.
