Call of Duty 4: Over 10 Million Served

Monday 25 August 2008 | Post A Comment

Call of Duty 4 celebrated a major milestone over the weekend as the game has now been played by more than 10 million people online via Xbox Live or the PS3 network. The announcement came on FourTwoZero's blog, check out a snippet below.
"I knew there were a lot of us out there, but just how many? Well, I received the reports this week and it looks like our COD4 online community stands at over 10 million strong (Xbox 360 / PS3)! That’s all unique players too, so 10 million different people have logged on for online multiplayer since buying the game in November. Those stats don’t include people who have never logged into MP, only those apart of the Online Community.

That’s insane. With a little over a million players logging in everyday for multiplayer, I can’t say I’m too surprised. It’s awesome to think that we’re all part of building something so massive, and when I say we, I mean me, you, all of us. Everyone who logs on to play with their friends, reads the blog, contributes on the forums, took part in the beta. You guys shaped this game and what it is today. We have one massive, powerful, community and all of you should be proud because there is honestly no other game community I’d rather be a part of. So when I say this, know that I mean it… THANK YOU!!!

We have some new multiplayer playlists in the works to breath even more life into multiplayer, in addition to that I’m working on a few other things behind the scenes that I can’t talk about just yet (in case they don’t come to fruition)."

FourTwoZero: Team Killers Are Lame

Saturday 9 August 2008 | Post A Comment

In a new blog post by FourTwoZero he discusses the troubles with team killers present when it comes to mods such as Search and Destroy and Deathmatch. With the new playlist update coming soon, the developers want to know your opinions on how to deal with friendly fire in your favorite mods. Head on over to his Official Blog and give him your views on the subject.
"Nothing ruins a game of Hardcore Search and Destroy or Hardcore Team Deathmatch faster than an excessive team killer being a douche. So, all this talk of new playlists we’ve been doing around the studio recently (with the help of my raw hatred of team killers) got me to thinking about some Hardcore playlists variations we could possibly introduce when we do the playlist update.

What do you guys think of having the option of playing your favorite Hardcore playlists standard (HC S&D, HC TDM) in addition to Hardcore (Friendly Fire Disabled). Essentailly, standard Hardcore rules with limited hud, increased weapon damage, etc. minus the dread of team killers?"

Next Call of Duty Title Set For 2009

Monday 4 August 2008 | Post A Comment

During a post-earnings release conference call, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick mentioned that "an all-new Call of Duty" title will be released in 2009. No word was announced on what theater the game will take place in, which includes rumors that it could be based on a futuristic battlefield. Kotick also confirmed the title will "leapfrog" studios, putting Activision in charge of development.

Thanks for Kotaku for the news.

New Call of Duty 4 Playlists Testing Continues

Thursday 31 July 2008 | Post A Comment

In a new blog post, FourTwoZero has confirmed that testing of the new Call of Duty 4 playlist is continuing as normal.
"Internal QA on the new multiplayer playlists for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Test found a small bug with Hardcore HQ where Friendly Fire wasn’t enabled. Addressing that. Investigating solutions for the No Perks bug that doesn’t disable slot 1 perks. Overall, it’s going really well though.

Sending in the new Playlist’s descriptions to production for translation and localizations. Doing this now, so hopefully it’s done with localization by the time the playlists are through QA so there are no unneeded delays."
For more on the playlists and the testing process, head on over to the FourTwoZero Blog.

New Playlist Game Modes Confirmed

Wednesday 23 July 2008 | Post A Comment

A few weeks ago, we reported that FourTwoZero was testing out some user submitted game modes and creating a new game mode playlist. Well now, he has confirmed that several of the modes will be featured in the game via an upcoming update, although no release date was announced. While we aren't sure which ones for sure will make it to the release, you can check out a few of the possibilities below:
"Bare-bones Team Deathmatch

No more excuses. No more blaming Martyrdom or Juggernaut for your lack of skills and kills. Bare Bones Team Deathmatch eliminates the excuses and takes it back to basics with standard Team Deathmatch with no perks, no kill streak rewards. Just you, your skill, and your weapons.

Hardcore HQ

Hardcore HQ requires a lot more than just spamming the HQ position with nades and running in guns blazing. Hardcore HQ encourages more tactical gameplay and communication to win with increased damage, no HUD elements, and friendly fire on.

Multi-bomb Search and Destroy

Multi-bomb Search and Destroy starts every member of the attacking team with a bomb. So everyone has the opportunity to plant if they’re good enough.

Hardcore FFA

Even faster paced Free For Alls, where every bullet counts and playing smart is key for a solid k/d ratio. Standard Free for All rules, with Hardcore mode enabled for extra damage, no HUD, and no health re-gen."

The Future Of Infinity Ward

Monday 7 July 2008 | Post A Comment

In a new blog post, FourTwoZero has provided some insight into the future of Infinity Ward, specifically with regards to their relationship involving Activision, their involvement in the community, and the expansion of their studio. You can get a snippet from the post below, and to read the full thing checkout the FourTwoZero Blog.
"We’re excited to announce that in the recent months we have decided to reup on our contract with Activision publishing. The recently renegotiated deal may not seem like much of an impact from the outside perspective, but it has laid the ground work and kick started our future project, as well as the possibility of a unique new IP by Infinity Ward, that we’ll have complete control over. We’re excited to be working on our next project, but it’s going to be quite a while before I can share any details on exactly what that project is."

Monday 30 June 2008 | Post A Comment

I missed this one on Friday since I was out of town, but a new patch has been released for Call of Duty 4. The update, version 1.7, is an incremental upgrade patch, meaning that you must download and install version 1.6 in order for it to work. Here are all the changes and fixes in the update:
"Changes / Fixes 1.7 Patch
- Fixed an exploit that allowed players to access certain console dvars during multi-player matches.
- Fixed a crash that could occur when a Chinatown Sabotage match would go into over-time.
- Fixed a bug where the MP icons (Bomb, Defend, Capture, etc) were always showing up as English regardless of the install language."

You can download the new 1.7 patch from us below. Remember that you MUST install the 1.6 patch first for the patch to work properly. A link to the 1.6 patch can be found below as well.

Rumor: Call of Duty Going Sci-Fi?

Monday 23 June 2008 | Post A Comment

While many Call of Duty gamers, including myself, anticipated Call of Duty 6 (yes 6!) returning to the modern combat theater, it appears the title may be moving in a totally new direction. Rumors from Computer & Video Games are now circling that the next title will have a science fiction basis, somewhat similar to Battlefield 2142.
"Take it with a pinch of salt for the time being but an insider from Infinity Ward is reported to have said, "we are currently working on a new sci-fi title, we cannot release any more information as of yet, we may or may not announce it at E3.""
Remember this is a rumor, as C&VG reminds you to take it with "a pinch of salt". We will keep you posted as more information becomes available.

Variety Map Pack sponsored by NVIDIA hits PC June

Saturday 31 May 2008 | Post A Comment

Nivida is sponsoring the PC Variety Map Pack. This means that the PC will get it for free.

"Great news! Heads up that the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Variety Map Pack sponsored by NVIDIA will be available worldwide for our PC players next week on June 5th!

NVIDIA is making it possible for PC players to download the map pack for Free on the PC thanks to their sponsorship. In addition, expect to see quite a few promotions popping up leading up to the launch of the map packs on the 5th and beyond. I know NVIDIA has a lot of great things planned for PC users in addition to maps becoming available.

There’s going to be some PC specific previews going up online this weekend I believe that will cover how well the maps play on the PC version as well as some contests and promotions happening all next week. I’ll be posting up details on them as they get started all this week!

The Variety Map Pack includes four new maps for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare multiplayer including Broadcast, Chinatown, Killhouse, and Creek.

I will post a full patch notes list next week."

FourZeroTwo Blog Update - 5/29/08

Friday 30 May 2008 | Post A Comment

FourZeroTwo has an update for us via his blog.

"The Dtoid army is descending on the Cincinnati / Northern Kentucky tri-state area for their largest ‘No Apparent Reason Party’ (NARP) ever this weekend and I’ll be flying in from Los Angeles to join them.

With, whats growing to be nearly 1000, gamers locally and from all over the country making their way by land, sea (wait… it’s ohio..), and air to the event for no apparent reason other than to hang out with fellow like minded gamers (and COD4 fans of course); I’ve decided to come fully prepared and will be packing heat… in the form of limited edition Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare t-shirts fresh off the press. We’ll be throwing them out to the crowd during the party so be prepare yo’ snatchin hands.

Oh yeah… did I mention I got some awesome news coming down the pipeline at the end of the week for our PC players? I can’t say what it is now, but I’m sure most of you can see it coming a mile away. I’ll have that info for you around Friday hopefully.

Meanwhile, those of you subscribed to the video blog and those (nearly 9 thousand) of you who sent in messages and questions you’d like to see answered in the next video blog, I have a new one currently in the works that answers a lot of your questions as well as will be giving you a sneak peek at a line of new shirts we’re getting printed for Call of Duty 4 fans (and giving some away to subscribers), and one of the prototypes we already printed. I’m going to try to get that out to you guys as soon as I can (I want to capture some footage at the NARP event hopefully) to add to it, in addition to the fact that there is an awesome new Gaming site that’s preparing to launch in the not too distant future that will be playing a crucial role in the future episodes of the video blog series… details on that coming wayyy later."

Wonder what the news is for the PC players? DL content may be or maybe the 1.6 patch news. Guess we will have to wait and see.

James Bond Game To Employ Call of Duty 4

Monday 12 May 2008 | Post A Comment

Well apparently the Call of Duty 4 game engine will now reach well beyond the modern combat battlefield. Rumors have surfaced that the new James Bond Quantum of Solace title, which is being developed for the movie release, will employ the Call of Duty 4 game engine. Even though I haven't picked up a Bond title since Golden Eye, this will certainly get me to take a second look at it when its released.
"Only a few seconds were dedicated to talking about this new Bond game, but at least one bullet point was a doozy: Activision announced that Quantum of Solace will use the same amazing engine (at least on some platforms) that powered 2007's graphically-astounding Call of Duty 4. According to Griffith, Quantum of Solace, "uses the Call of Duty 4 engine and technology to bring Bond games to a new level." How this will work out for the various versions of the game that did not see the release of Call of Duty 4 (the title is planned for release on just about every system on the planet) is unknown, but for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 fans into Bond, nobody's engine does it better."

Thanks to V3D for this bit.

PS3 Variety Map Pack Released

Sunday 27 April 2008 | Post A Comment

Fourzerotwo has the news that the Playstation 3 Variety Map Pack for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has been released. However, it is region locked for you international users out there, so make sure you read the following:

Heads up for international users purchasing the Variety Map Pack for the PS3. The Variety Map Pack is Region Locked, which means that you MUST purchase the version of the map pack which is compatible with the version of the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare game disc that you have.

For example:

If you have the GERMAN version of the game, you MUST purchase the GERMAN version of the map pack.

If you have the UK version of the game, you MUST purchase the UK version of the map pack.

Just make sure that the Disc version and the Map Pack version matches up. If you have an UK version of the game, DO NOT purchase a German version of the map pack. It won’t work. The same goes for any other mismatched version.

There you have it, so make sure that you get to downloading it right away!

Infinity Ward Will Not Retake Franchise

Wednesday 23 April 2008 | Post A Comment

Well Activision today put to rest a flurry or rumors suggesting that Infinity Ward was planning on retaking the Call of Duty franchise. The rumors suggested that Infinity Ward would be the sole developer of all Call of Duty titles after Call of Duty 5, which is currently being developed by TreyArch. However, in a post from EuroGamer, Activision assured the community this would not be occurring.
"Activision has rubbished rumours that Infinity Ward has moved to take control of the entire Call of Duty series.

A spokesperson for the publisher told Eurogamer it was a total fabrication, and that Treyarch and Infinity Ward would still alternately create instalments in the shooter series."

Variety Pack Available For Download

Friday 4 April 2008 | Post A Comment

As of 9:30 AM EST Xbox Live users were able to purchase and download the new Variety Map Pack for Call of Duty 4. Those who pick up the pack this weekend will also get something extra, the possibility of picking up XP while playing on the maps. The download is about 445 MB and costs 800 MS points. Here is the description from the Xbox Live Marketplace.
"Reinforcements have arrived! The Variety Map Pack includes four new multiplayer maps featuring a variety of locations. “Creek,” a wide-open village ravaged by combat where concealment is the difference between life and death; “Broadcast,” fight throughout an enemy communications building with confined corridors and wide-open parking lots; “Chinatown,” a foggy downtown district, lit only by a full moon and the neon glow of the city; and “Killhouse,” featuring a desolate training warehouse filled with a variety of building mock-ups and soft and hard cover points."

On a side note, keep checking back this week for a review and guide to the new maps. In the meantime enjoy.

Map Pack Delay Rumors Put To Rest

Thursday 3 April 2008 | Post A Comment

Turns out all those rumors you have been hearing about the Variety Pack release being delayed are false, confirms Activision. They have assured us that despite a rumor stating the release date had been moved a week back, the original release of April 4th will be met.
"Despite what the internet might tell you (including some “official” sources), the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare variety map pack has NOT been delayed until the 10th. As of right now we’re pushing certification for an on-time release for April 3rd or 4th. As of right now though, I’m being told that it’s a good chance it will be released worldwide (except for Japan) tomorrow night / early-Friday morning."

It is believed the rumors might have been part of a larger April Fools joke, however I don't think anyone, especially Activision, really laughed.

Call Of Duty 4 New Single Player Content?

Tuesday 1 April 2008 | Post A Comment

Videogamer recently got the chance to sit down the developers at Activision to get the scoop on the future of Call of Duty 4. One particular feature gamers are keeping an eye on is the possibility of new content for the single player mode, downloadable through Xbox Live. While the developers aren't confirming anything, they said the possibility remains on the table. Here's a snippet.
"CoD4 is currently the most played game across Xbox LIVE and PSN and has sold phenomenally well across multiple consoles since its release late last year. While gamers have been looking forward to new multiplayer maps for some time, we haven't heard anything about new single-player content.

When asked if gamers will ever see new single-player DLC for CoD4, Infinity Ward programmer Jon Shiring told VideoGamer.com: "I wouldn't rule it out but we don't have any plans for that right now."

Developers tend to prefer to release new multiplayer content than single-player content when it comes to first-person shooters. When it comes to CoD4, Shiring explained, the new DLC was in direct response to community requests."

Xbox Live Cheaters Beware

Thursday 27 March 2008 | Post A Comment

Despite an overwhelming hatred, cheaters and stat padders have been a part of gaming for as long as anyone can remember. However, for those who choose to cheat on Xbox Live, the penalties for these activities have just gotten a lot more serious. Microsoft has announced several new ways it hopes to curb the growing number of cheaters on the network, while publicly embarrassing them at the same time.
"A LIVE player who obtained their gamerscore in this abnormal way will

- Find their gamerscore reset to zero, and
- Be unable to regain all previously earned achievements, and
- Be labeled as a cheater for the community to view.

While players who have been identified by these criteria will start from a zero gamerscore, they will still be able to gain achievements for future games. In other words, we give them another chance to earn future achievements by earning them as other fair players do. The original gamerscore correction will remain permanent without any way to appeal."

While it doesn't go as far as Valve's anti-cheating policy, where hackers loose their account, it is most certainly a step in the right direction.

Call of Duty 4 publisher Activision has confirmed the Variety Map Pack will be available for a limited time on Xbox Live. The official map pack will be available for download April 3rd for 800 MS Points (10 USD), and will remain available for 21 days after that. The date may seem familiar to some, as it is also the release date for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Game of the Year Edition, which will include the map pack by way of a token redeemable for a free download.

While no official word announcement as to when the map pack will be available for PC's and PS3's, the press release by Activision seems to suggest that it will be released shortly after the Xbox 360 version. Along with the announcement came several new screenshots as well, two of which can be found below.

Infinity Ward #2 Developer

Saturday 8 March 2008 | Post A Comment

GameDeveloper Magazine recently revealed the top 50 game developers in the industry. Here are the top five:

1. Nintendo Kyoto (Brain Age, Wii Play)
2. Infinity Ward (Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare)
3. Blizzard Entertainment (World Of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade)
4. Electronic Arts Canada (FIFA Soccer 08, NBA Street: Homecourt)
5. Valve (Portal, Team Fortress 2)

Here's what the magazine had to say regarding Infinity Ward:

The second place went to Activision-owned developer Infinity Ward, thanks to both the resounding critical and commercial success of its 2007 release Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and high scores and healthy praise for the developer’s working conditions, professionalism, and attention to quality.

Congratulations to Infinity Ward on this achievement. Thanks to FourZeroTwo for the news.

What's Next For The Call of Duty Franchise?

Wednesday 5 March 2008 | Post A Comment

With Call Of Duty 4 becoming such a huge hit, the question now is what's next for Activision and the Call Of Duty franchise? Well we might have a closer look into this subject as Kotaku had the chance to sit down with Activision head Bobby Kotick. Although not officially announced, Kotick did hint that they may be thinking about converting it into a MMO, similar to that of World Of Warcraft.
"Kotick said to investors at the Morgan Stanley Technology Conference, "What would be the natural evolution of a property like Call of Duty into a massively-multiplayer environment and how do you monetize that?"

Kotick parlayed that into a thought on in-game advertising, in which he pointed to Starcraft as a model for short-session, ladder tournament play that can easily support ad spots. While a Call of Duty MMO may be a long way off, if it ever gets off the ground, it's starting to sound like Activision execs may be giving it serious thought and we'd expect it to be a big focus for the publisher's ad revenue model."

While the thought of a Call Of Duty MMO might interest some, it would still be quite a ways off. The comments above are far from an official announcement, and Kotick himself has said before for a game to compete with World of Warcraft billions of dollars would need to be invested in research and development. None the less, it gives fans everywhere a new aspect of the franchise to talk about.

PC and PS3 Updates

Wednesday 5 March 2008 | Post A Comment

Infinity Wards community manager has posted a new blog, check out a snippet from it below:

"The PS3 feature patch is currently at certification at Sony and has been for about a week now. It’s going through it’s necessary channels worldwide for each respective region. We haven’t heard any problems back so that’s a great sign. We haven’t received any eta from Sony (which is typical for these types of things) but if I hear any indication of when you might be able to expect it I’ll pass it along.

As for the PC version, Patch 1.6 will be the one that introduces the new Kill Cams and other features the console feature patches received for you guys. The work is done on that patch and it’s essentially awaiting and going through internal QA here at Infinity Ward and then Activision. The good thing about the PC version is it doesn’t require any certification so as soon as it’s finished internal QA it heads out the door to the players."

Tom's Games Interviews Robert Bowling

Friday 29 February 2008 | Post A Comment

Tom's Games has put up an interview with Infinity Ward's community manager, Robert Bowling (FourZeroTwo). Here's an excerpt:

TG: Are you going to continue to add content for both the consoles and the PC?

Robert Bowling: Our main focus is to keep supporting the game as long as the players are supporting us. So as long as they're people playing we're going to keep updating it. Right now we're working on a DLC map pack for the PS3 and the 360 version which are going to include three maps right out of the gate. We're working on that now and that should be coming out around springtime although we don't' have an exact ETA. We're just working on getting them perfect right now.

New Call Of Duty 4 Content Could Be On The Way

Thursday 28 February 2008 | Post A Comment

XBOX 360 players could be experiencing new Call of Duty 4 content as early as this weekend. The word comes from Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling, who has updated his IAMfourzerotwo blog saying that the patch is "very, very close". While nothing has been officially confirmed by Infinity Ward, it is none the less very promising for the long awaited update. Check out Bowling's blog post below.
"With the release of our Feature patch and DLC coming closer and closer every day, and plenty of new playlist ideas being thrown around for Call of Duty 4 multiplayer I know we can keep the fight going for a long long time. I love these weekly number checks because it provides a great opportunity to give you guys a weekly update on how things are going here at the studio with those updates, so with that said…

I got word that the Xbox 360 Feature patch could be ‘very very close’, I can’t tell you exactly when because they haven’t passed on that information but apparently certification went fantastic and I was given the Green light to take care of some things that I have to do before it goes live to you guys, which means good things. I’m not going to get any hopes up, but I hope to be seeing some new Kill Cams by the weekend if we’re lucky. Don’t hold me to that though, but I have a good feeling about it."

Bungie is attempting to take first from COD4

Tuesday 26 February 2008 | Post A Comment

Well personally, I think that Bungie doesn't have a chance to take Call of Duty's spot as numero uno on the ladder. Call of Duty 4 has a solid fan-base and has a long line of games which I think will keep it anchored in first place and there's no way I think Bungie could overtake them.

Halo 3 hasn't been top of the pops on Major Nelson's Xbox Live activity charts for a little while now, but Bungie plans to fight back.

"We have a lot of awesome new content coming up. We're not walking away from Halo 3," Bungie's community lead Brian Jarrard told Eurogamer last week at GDC.

"We have a group of people at the studio that are just focused on keeping the game going strong for the foreseeable future, so I think we'll continue to evolve and I expect there to be a back-and-forth [between us and COD4] for a while."

Call Of Duty 4 New Interview

Saturday 16 February 2008 | Post A Comment

IGN has posted a new exclusive interview with Infinity Ward's community manager, Robert Bowling. The interview discusses everything Call Of Duty 4, including the development process and what is next for the franchise.
"IGN: How does downloadable content development work? Are the upcoming maps something that was in development at the time IW was working on COD4 and that they were maybe just held back or are they brand new creations?

Bowling: It depends. These specific maps we are working on now are 95% brand new maps that we started working on after the game shipped. There are a few we are working on that were maps we originally wanted in the shipped game, but didn't get finished in time. I hope our community doesn't feel we held anything back, because we put anything we thought was up to standard in the game. There's a few that are [being worked on] that people will see and say, "Oh, this map is straight from the single-player, why didn't they just put this in the original game?""
